About the Project

The ORATER project is seeking to explore the challenges and opportunities that are facing universities seeking to provide graduates capable of meeting the needs of modern businesses that are engaging in analytics. The project is focused on three specific elements:

1. Identifying the needs of employers. In order to best recommend how universities can develop courses to educate and train potential analytics professionals it is necessary to first understand what exactly businesses are looking for.

2. Identifying what potential students seek from analytics courses. Whilst it is important to consider what businesses require from analytics professionals, another key consideration is what potential students are looking for. This allows courses to be designed that appeal to students and are likely to be filled.

3. Identifying the barriers and considerations than affect universities in developing such courses. Again a critical part of implementing such changes is to fully understand the environmental constraints and perspectives within academia.

(You can read more about the project aims here).

In order to meet these aims we are looking for the expertise and opinions of a variety of the stakeholders discussed above.

Firstly we are seeking to conduct interviews with practitioners working in analytics, recruitment agencies and consultants working with analytics professionals, analytics software vendors, and consultants specialising in any aspect of analytics. These interviews are planned to be conducted in 2013. If you can help with this and would like to have your say, please This email address is being protected from spambots. Secondly we are distributing a questionnaire designed to understand the needs of potential students. The courses we are particularly interested in are analytics, operational research/management science, information systems, data mining, and data science courses. If you are planning on or might consider studying bachelors or masters degrees, or other courses in these fields we would be very keen to hear your opinions. We are distributing this questionnaire in late September and October so please register your interest This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. .

For the final part of this research we are seeking the opinions of academics, researchers, university administrators and vocational course providers interested in analytics or any related fields. These interviews will be conducted in early 2014. If you may be able to help with this then please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. here.

This project relies on the contribution of people like you and your expertise and we are very grateful for any help you can give.
